The Building Sustainability Index, also known as BASIX is a planning initiative of the New South Wales Government which provides a valuable contribution to the sustainable future of our communities.
BASIX requires all new dwellings and buildings to achieve a 40% reduction in water consumption and in greenhouse gas emissions as compared to dwellings that were built pre-BASIX.
Further to this, BASIX raises the bar when it comes to thermal comfort, settting a mimumum performance level, delivering savings and improved comfort levels for owners and occupiers alike.
A BASIX Certificate identifies the sustainability features required to be incorporated in the building design such as rainwater tanks and recycled water, taps, landscaping, heat pump or solar water heaters, gas space heaters, roof eaves/awnings and wall/ceiling insulation.
Here at Renyi, our building value engineers in Sydney explain that a BASIX assessment considers such criteria as location, building orientation, size, building construction type, windows size and type, landscaping, appliances to be used and much more. Importantly, it also considers “thermal comfort” in order to lessen the amount of energy used by dwellings in order to heat or cool the house to a “comfortable” level.
